Editorial: Cosmic Walker: What it Could Potentially Be

January 26, 2010, 09:07:59 AM by Zeypher
In October of 2008, Nintendo showed off a compilation video of numerous Wii exclusive titles set to hit Japan in 2009. Among those games were titles such as Sin and Punishment 2, Dynamic Slash (known as Zangeki no REGINLEIV) and Cosmic Walker. The first of which, Sin and Punishment 2, has already been released in Japan and is hitting NA and EU shelves in early 2010. Zangeki no REGINLEIV was recently released in Japan with a special black casing -- showing Nintendo’s support for the mature title, and a possible localization in other regions. The last of the three mentioned games, Cosmic Walker, has been shrouded with much mystery since its initial trailer and general tidbits of info.

With the very little amount of information known about Cosmic Walker, many different speculations can be made about the gameplay of this space set action-adventure title. There are two different ways Cosmic Walker can go -- both equally great: an exploration sim taking place in the Milky Way, or the tale of an epic adventure set in space.

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks review (By Zeypher)

January 04, 2010, 11:13:21 PM by Zeypher
Link has ditched his boat for a steam-powered train in the sequel to Zelda's first DS outing -- The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks. The similarities to its predecessor Phantom Hourglass are certainly present, as Spirit Tracks runs off the same engine and uses the same visuals as Phantom Hourglass does. Both games even feature a mechanical mode of transportation, and both games have a central dungeon that is replayed several times throughout the game. Is Spirit Tracks just Phantom Hourglass 2, or does it make enough changes to remain a unique and enriching game -- and possibly the greatest portable Zelda adventure?

Spirit Tracks takes place 100 years after the events of Phantom Hourglass. The previous Link and Tetra have found a new land to call Hyrule, and it was then colonized by the new Hylians. A race known as the Lokomo were already present in the new land and helped the new Hylians settle. The Lokomo are the protectors of the Spirit Tracks -- rails that imprison the evil Demon King inside the Tower of Spirits, and allow the citizens to travel by train. Once the game begins, the new Link is traveling to Hyrule Castle to receive his Engineer's Certificate, which is basically his train driver's license. Once Link receives his certificate, Zelda will ask to meet him after the ceremony. Zelda tells Link that the shady Chancellor Cole can't be trusted, and that she needs to go to the Tower of Spirits immediately. On their way to the tower, Link's train is derailed by none other than Chancellor Cole and his lackey Byrne. Cole reveals that he wishes to revive the Demon King, and the only way to do that is if Zelda's body is used as a vessel. With his dark powers, Cole separates Zelda's spirit from her body and takes her physical form with him. This begins one of the more story driven titles in the Zelda series, as Link must restore the Spirit Tracks to prevent the Demon King's revival -- with the help of Princess Zelda.

Rumor: Zelda Wii to Take to the Skies, Chances of an Ocarina of Time Remake?

November 28, 2009, 03:10:37 PM by Zeypher
In recent interviews with Eiji Aonuma, the Zelda director gave some hints about what we could possibly see in the new Zelda Wii, along with his thoughts on an Ocarina of Time remake.

Speaking about new gameplay mechanics in the new Zelda Wii, Aonuma said: "I have an eight-year-old son myself at home, and quite recently he started playing The Phantom Hourglass for DS, because when the software first hit the market he was too young. When he started playing with the boat, I told him: 'In the next Zelda, you are going to be able to ride on the train.' He answered: 'OK, Dad, first boat, and then train? Surely next time, Link is going to fly in the sky... '"

He added: "I just don't know. If many people make many speculations... some of them might be correct. Right now, I have to refrain from commenting on anything."

Keep in mind this is only rumor, but could the next Wii Zelda have some sort of flying transportation mechanic for Link?

In regards to an Ocarina of Time remake, Aonuma had this to say: "Well, I sometimes hear such requests from people who want to play Ocarina of Time on Wii, they ask us to remake it and take advantage of Wii technology. Whenever we have to think about the remake, we have to also think about the background, especially what kind of situation, what kind of period and time that previous game was played in, because be it Ocarina of Time or any other games, whenever they say they want to have a remake on whichever platform, they have some emotional attachment from playing that game at that particular time or environment.

That sort of background is always there when they talk about or request the remake of a game. We cannot afford to destroy that kind of emotional attachment. Still, even if we are going to take advantage of the improved technology, we have to have some breakthrough in the gameplay. That combination is not an easy one. Whenever we talk about this breakthrough technology, we come up with ideas that we would like to incorporate into the new Zelda franchise. So that's the current situation and that's the reason why we are not very aggressive in exploring the possibility of remaking the past Zelda series. If I can think of how do it, or any other inspiration comes to me, without destroying the emotional attachment people have to the past game, and I can make some great innovation or renovation on the remake, then I might be able to think about it further."

What are your hopes for a possible Ocarina of Time remake in the future, if ever?

Aonuma: Topping Ocarina of Time will be "quite complicated"

November 23, 2009, 02:07:55 PM by Zeypher
In a recent interview with Spanish magazine El Mundo, Eiji Aonuma reflected on how surpassing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time will be difficult.

"Surpassing it is very complicated. In addition," Aonuma said, "the things of the past pass on to our memories and there they grow bigger. Now if you play Ocarina of Time, you realize that it is not such a good game. There are times when it does not move quickly, the graphics are not as nice as they should be, there are parts that are somewhat confusing... Now, other Zelda games are technically superior. Everything is much faster, much better... But to overcome Ocarina of Time, what is needed is a change comparable to what occurred back then. And that's something that is quite complicated."

How do you think the Zelda Team might surpass Ocarina of Time? Is it possible?
