Xbox 360 Review | Call of Duty 2
« on: March 01, 2009, 05:15:12 PM »

Call of Duty 2
Publisher: Activision
Developer: Infinity Ward
System: 360
Release: November 15, 2005, US

Story
The story of Call of Duty 2 puts you in the perspective of 1 Russian Soldier, 2 British Soldiers, and 1 American Soldier. The game has great switches between scenarios, from D-Day in the Invasion of Normandy, to the African desert as the British, it is always differing. There isn't much to really say about the actual individual stories of each faction, it is mostly just a bunch of battles with varying situations.

Sound 14/15
The sound of this game, to say the least, is excellent. From the distant sounds of mortar fire to planes pouring bullets right over your head. The soldiers of each faction all use correct dialogue for the time and accents. Gun fire also sounds like its real life counterparts. Great all around.

Graphics 19/20
In my opinion, this is where Call of Duty 2 really shines, just take a look at this screenshot:

Just take a look at the detail of the soldiers face, and intensity of it all. Here is another screenshot:

Although there were some quirks and bland textures, this game still looks excellent.

Appeal 25/25
Tell me, what is there to not like about mowing down hundreds of Germans from your m16 (or whatever you call it) turret and watching them scower for cover. It is quite exhilarating. From climbing of a large cliff during a D-Day and watching your buddies fall from up above  you down to the ground below is also exciting. You can make this game even more intense by switching the difficulty over to Veteran, turning this game into something like the Brothers in Arms series.

Gameplay 37/40
Really the only problem I have with this game, is the occasional repetition and same animations for shot up soldiers. Although it still sometimes looks nice. And besides the tank missions, almost every level is the same. You either: A. Push forward towards your objective or B. Hold off attacking enemy waves, which can get dull at times. Otherwise it is really fun, just a bit standard at times.

Overall 95/100
Truly an epic game, just with occasionally flaws, I highly recommend it. Especially when it is so cheap right now.

Nice review.

I'm not a huge fan of WW2 shooters though. Don't you think the troops are tired by now?

I dunno, I seem to like playing games that are based on actual events for some reason. But yeah I agree, they are overusing the WWII franchise way too much.

I got this for X-mas. Haven't been loving it as much as I expected, too repetitive and long. Graphics don't hold up too well. Excellent review, I just don't quite agree.

It is a lot better than CoD2's engine.

I prefer the DOOM engine. More modern games should use that.
