Remembering the GameCube: Super Smash Bros. Melee
« on: March 10, 2011, 06:09:56 PM »

Super Smash Bros. Melee is the critically-acclaimed sequel to the original Nintendo mascot fighter and succeeds on all its merits. While the original began with its bare-bones idea and lacked content to back up a stronger following, it was thankfully saved by its successor SSBM a few years later. I'd be lying if I said the simplicity of the original SSB isn't fun, but Melee's advancements in technology and features were welcomed for adding so much. Even a detailed review is nowhere near enough to cover the content in this massive game, especially for a mascot fighter with such a humble beginning.

You suck. It was my favorite Gamecube game. Yet another reason why SSBB was such a major disappointment.

Brawl wasn't a major disappointment, it's a damn fine game. The online play was a major disappointment.

It kinda was, a lot of good fighters from Melee got nerfed to hell and it was filled with a bunch of crappy gimmicks. Coin shooter, stickers and virtual console games which were just advertisements (as if throwing a bunch of Nintendo and a few third party characters in a game wasn't enough). They even made adventure mode shit, it was almost unbearable to play through it even once. Nintendo also ruined the genuinely fun things in Melee like the target smash. I would say the only good idea they had was the stage builder but even then it was poorly implemented.

Another thing I'm still pissy about is the Fox triplets. Just a waste of a character slot.

Adventure mode in Melee was pretty shitty too. Subspace Emissary was a good attempt at an actual single player game, and it was actually a pretty good platformer in its own right. I don't understand how you can complain about more content... especially the characters. The only thing that was different from what I could tell is that jumping is a little bit more sluggish. The Smash Bros. series is just fan service anyway.

The adventure mode in Melee could be played by any character you want and it was basically going through tons of levels from other Nintendo games. Each level was vastly different and tons of them had secrets and shit. And it seems like the more content they put in the game the less they worked on everything else. It just felt at if they were just trying to cram as much stuff as possible on the disk hoping people want quantity more than quality. And yes I know the Smash Bros. series is pretty much fan service, hence me basically referring to mashing a ton of different characters together as advertising. Overall it was trying to be a jack of all trades game but it didn't really come close.

This is a cool review series and I can't wait to see what other games you write about. I do, however, prefer Brawl over Melee, I actually like the slower fighting and the larger roster. Even if a few characters were clones. Wish online play was much, much better though.

Thanks a lot, I appreciate it. I don't recall ever saying I was doing a series of reviews on gamecube games ONLY, I actually plan on doing some NES reviews since there are absolutely ZERO on the website here (I'm writing up Kirby's Adventure, right now, should be done in a few days).

Also, I don't prefer Melee or Brawl to another. They're both very good games in their own merits, and I respect Nintendo and Masahiro Sakurai for putting together such a great series for fans and gamers alike. That we can agree on, right?

What? hilarious, but inaccurate to the comment I made.

I'm here to do retro reviews and that's what I plan on doing, I just found it surprising when I first saw the site is all.
