In an
andriasang report, Nintendo have confirmed the existence of a multiplayer mode for Steel Diver, along with some details on its functionality.
"Naval Battle Mode," the game's multiplayer, is very similar to Battleship. The bottom screen shows a grid and players must seek out and destroy their opponent's hidden ships in turn-based fashion. The top screen of the 3DS will show the viewpoint of the current ship players have selected. Each player will have a set number of submarines, escort ships, and freighters. The different ship types all have their own special abilities: submarines can enter enemy territory, escorts can attack enemy submarines that have crossed over, and freighters are the ships players must protect. If a player loses all of their freighters, they lose the battle.
No word of online multiplayer has been given, but Naval Battle Mode will be playable through single card download play. Steel Diver will release as a 3DS launch title for North America on March 27, 2011.
