News / Mario Kart 7 review
« on: December 12, 2011, 12:35:53 PM »
There's no doubt that Nintendo has milked Mario brand name for all its worth -- and why not? Mario is the most recognizable figure in the gaming world, to hardcore gamers and casuals alike. The character has appeared in over 200 games along with countless pop-culture references. Out of all the Mario spinoff and sports games, however, Mario Kart is by far the best, and has been ever since the original Super NES outing. Nintendo's 3DS already has its Mario Kart title, creatively named Mario Kart 7, but does it bring enough to the table to make gamers put down Mario Kart DS and Mario Kart Wii?

News / Emotion's Role in Video Games
« on: December 02, 2011, 06:15:25 PM »
The chief goal of any great story is to create likeable characters that the audience will connect with. This is true not only for books and movies, but for video games as well -- especially in this age of high processing power where developers can tell their story through epic cut-scenes that bridge the gap between gameplay and narrative. Not every game makes use of emotional connection, so it begs the question: what is emotion's role in gaming?

News / Wii's Lifecycle in Review
« on: November 30, 2011, 01:18:40 PM »
No matter what Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime may claim, the Wii's last great title has already released; that is, of course, unless gamers are really looking forward to Fortune Street and Mario Party 9, which are essentially the same game. Fils-Aime is, in all likely-hood, blowing smoke when he says that there's still great content to come on Wii. If he's referring to an incredibly unlikely localization of The Last Story and Xenoblade Chronicles in North America, the point still stands as those games have released already in other regions: the Wii's days of producing high quality content are over.

News / Similarities between Skyward Sword and Majora's Mask
« on: November 25, 2011, 05:29:22 PM »
With all the new gameplay mechanics and innovations that Skyward Sword has brought The Legend of Zelda series, it borrows some ideas heavily from one other title in the franchise: Majora's Mask. These mechanics borrowed from Majora's Mask vary in level of influence, and many go far and above what was present in the N64's second Zelda title -- these two games have more in common that just sharing the same type of save point system.

News / Side Quests in Gaming: Love-Hate Relationship
« on: November 22, 2011, 04:01:48 PM »
There's no doubt that most games that have released this generation are tragically short. That doesn't mean that those games are bad, it just means that developers have, by in large, ignored the single player experience in favor of online multiplayer. Luckily, there are still developers that fully embrace features that are meant to be in single player games: side quests. Four very different games released over the span of several months, each one of which is single player based and utilizes side quests in very different ways.

News / The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Review
« on: November 20, 2011, 02:08:56 PM »
The Legend of Zelda has been one of the leaders in innovation over the last 25 years. Zelda was the definitive console experience on NES: the game that couldn't be played on an arcade machine. Ocarina of Time revolutionized the way developers created games in a 3D space, and Twilight Princess increased the world's scope beyond what any Zelda game previously did. While Nintendo took many chances with the Metroid series -- both good and bad -- and released new Mario title after new Mario title, The Legend of Zelda has been the publisher's flagship series, the franchise that is the true representation of what the company is capable of. After a five year wait, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is finally upon us, and to the delight of hardcore fans and Zelda detractors, Skyward Sword offers an experience unlike any game before it.

News / Comparing Super Mario 3D Land with Galaxy Series
« on: November 18, 2011, 10:00:34 PM »
The recently released Super Mario 3D Land will no doubt be compared with the Super Mario Galaxy series, drawing some comparisons that are both fair and unfair. After all, both Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are the highest scoring games of this generation, so it's natural that Nintendo's next 3D Mario title would be put up against those games. Just how closely does Super Mario 3D Land resemble the Galaxy series, or are they completely different games?
