Shocking Pokemon Announcement: What Will It Be? (by Carl B.)
September 12, 2011, by Carl B. - Pokemon director Junichi Masuada is set to make an appearance on Japanese TV show Pokemon Sunday. According to the description of this weekend's episode, Masuada will be making a "massive shock announcement" regarding the Pokemon series. There are loads of different possible announcements for the Pokemon director to make, and with Nintendo's 3DS press conference just hours away, we've narrowed it down to the most probable.
Pokemon Grey coming to 3DS
This, only in glorious 3D!
I'm not sure if this would be a "shock announcement" per se, considering a third Pokemon game has released with every generation (Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, and Platinum). In any case, an announcement of Pokemon Grey for Nintendo 3DS would be a major step to increase the widespread success of the system. It's actually rather strange that Nintendo didn't make Pokemon Black and White 3DS launch titles instead of DS games – just imagine how well the 3DS would have sold with exclusive Pokemon titles for it. If Pokemon Grey is announced, it's likely to come out in Japan in 2012 at the earliest; we just got Pokemon Black and White a mere six months ago.
Pokemon Snap... 3DS
You have no soul if you hate this game.
Pokemon Snap is easily one of the more beloved Nintendo 64 titles of yesteryear. The notion of taking pictures of various Pokemon sounds like an incredibly boring idea for a game, but the execution was flawless. Not to mention the original game had an unmistakable charm and rewarding secrets to discover. Pokemon Snap for Nintendo 3DS wouldn't be as exciting as Pokemon Grey, but it would certainly be more shocking. A Pokemon Snap title on 3DS would be completely genius given the system's front and back facing cameras along with Augmented Reality technology.
Mewtwo Wi-fi Event
Better be in the next Smash Bros.
We already know that a new Wi-fi event, featuring Mewtwo, will go live for Pokemon Black and White at some point in the future. I have no doubt that some information will be released about the event, but is this really all that shocking? Unless someone mis-translated the episode's description, this won't be the huge revelation. Especially considering Mewtwo is available in Heart Gold and Soul Silver for DS.
Pokemon RPG hits iPhone
Coming to an Apple near you!
The Pokemon Company previously announced that a Pokemon spin-off title will be releasing on iPhone, so it's not a stretch to think that they'd be willing to develop a main game – think generation six – for iOS. The only problem is that Nintendo owns the majority of the company and would be able to stop such a proposition. Still, I don't think any announcement would be as "massive" or "shocking" as a main Pokemon game for Nintendo's main competitor in the handheld space.
Pokemon MMO for Wii U
...only with Pokemon.
Wii U is already getting one console MMO in Dragon Quest X, so why not give it another? A Pokemon MMO is the game everyone wants, but one that Nintendo, unfortunately, is probably never going to make. However, Wii U would be the perfect Nintendo system for a Pokemon MMO, given that the system's controller could essentially emulate a mouse pad and keyboard.
Unwanted Pokemon Spinoff
I could have sworn that Pokemon could only say their names...
The Pokemon brand is almost as powerful as Mario, so naturally Nintendo have milked the series with plenty of spinoff games. For every main entry there are at least three spinoff games nobody wants, the last being PokePark Wii. How about a sequel to that terrible game?
Mystery Dungeon 3DS starring Bidoof
Looks like they beat us to it.
The Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series has been a pleasant surprise. They're essentially dungeon-crawler Shiren clones featuring Pokemon that don't seem to evolve. It's only a matter of time before the 3DS gets an entry, and considering Pokemon Black and White came out in March, it's probably too soon for a main RPG entry. Oh, and it'll star Bidoof.
In any case, we'll be finding out very soon. What do you hope the announcement is?
