Best Game Soundtracks of 2011 So Far (by Carl B.)

September 17, 2011, by Carl B. - Music in video games is often overlooked by fans. The first thing people usually ask about a game is what it's about, followed by an inquiry about the game's graphical prowess. Some of the greatest games of all time have had absolutely amazing soundtracks -- it's essential for any video game to have a top-notch musical score. Every year there are several games with stunning soundtracks; here are the greatest video game soundtracks thus far in 2011.

5. Xenoblade Chronicles

JRPG is the single genre where a great soundtrack is virtually a requirement. Music's primary goal is to create a distinct atmosphere in a game, and the score in Xenoblade Chronicles does exactly that. The game itself is an exploration JRPG with a large, sprawling world, perfectly complimented with an orchestrated soundtrack that gives off a sense of adventure to players.

4. Radiant Historia

Radiant Historia is the highest scoring Nintendo DS game on iNintendo for a reason. This JRPG not only has an amazing story and time-travel based gameplay, but it also features one of the better soundtracks in all of gaming, crafted by the same man behind Kingdom Hearts' soundtrack.

3. Portal 2

Valve's Portal 2 really had everything: thought provoking gameplay, a hilarious narrative, and a sound track that anyone can jam out to -- even while testing.

2. The Last Story

As I said in my import review of the game, The Last Story is truly a complete package and the best JRPG in decades. The soundtrack, done by Final Fantasy veteran Nobuo Uematsu, is equally as engaging.

1. Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Every track in Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a masterpiece. I'm not sure if there's been a video game soundtrack as consistently jaw dropping as Human Revolution's. The main theme, above, is only a precursor to the amazing musical experience found in the full game.
